Vic Rayward Smith
Professor of Computing Science, University of East Anglia
Vic Rayward-Smith was educated at Oxford, Edinburgh and London. He has spent over 30 years in computing research, 18 in OR and 9 in data mining and
is now a Professor in the School of Computing Sciences at UEA. He has also held visiting Professor posts at University of California, Santa Barbara,
at University of Colarodo, Boulder and Denver, at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and at Monash University in Melbourne.
He leads the Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms Laboratory in the School of Computing Sciences, comprising 8 faculty, 8 research associates
and over 30 doctoral students. The laboratory focusses on optimisation and data mining and works closely with industry to help improve their performance.
Notably clients include Norwich Union, Nortel, Lanner Group, British Gas, Unilever, NNUH and Derbyshire Police.
Professor Rayward-Smith is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms, published by Springer, and is an editorial board
member for the Journal of Scheduling and the Journal of Applied Intelligence. He is on the programme committee of five international conferences in AI,
OR and data mining.
He is a fellow and vice-chairman of the East Anglian branch of the British Computer Society, a fellow of the OR Society and a fellow of the Institute
for Mathematics and its Applications. He is a chartered engineer, a chartered mathematician and a certified IT practitioner.
He advises the government on research into computing and sits on the EPSRC panel.
